Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce has spoken of his desire to take Qantas “beyond the natural limits of our market size” but warned that the “phased transformation” of the airline over the coming years will be tough.

In a speech which further underlined Qantas’s determination to deepen its links and presence in Asia, Joyce said it would be “remiss” of management if it did not fully exploit the burgeoning Asia market.

Classically Catalan in the Pyrenees

July 18th, 2011 by Lara Aston

With a stunning location on the remote slopes of the eastern Pyrenees, with views of the iconic Canigou mountain, the medieval eco- lodge Can Rigall has just opened its doors following a five-year refurbishment.

The 11-room French Catalan farm (or mas) offers rustic medieval character in the form of ivy-clad stone walls and beamed ceilings, and the 300-year-old fireplace in the library, while hybrid eco technology includes 70 per cent of the estate’s energy drawn from sustainable supplies, solar panels, a wind farm and a reforestation plan to re-introduce rare cork oak trees.

The grounds hold a natural swimming pool, while boules and mountain bikes are provided free of charge. Nearby is the town of Ceret, which inspired Picasso, Chagall and Matisse, whose paintings are on display at the nearby Museum of Modern Art. The nearest airport is Perpignan, one hour away.

Mas Can Rigall is available for exclusive use during July and August from 675pp B&B per week (based on 22 sharing). From September to June from 75pp per night B&B, basecampexplorer.com
